Protective Factors

Making Ourselves Matter Services Society (MOMSS) will make protective factors a significant part of our program.

Protective factors are the positive influences that can improve the lives of individuals and increase community safety. They have proven to be effective in building resiliency and decreasing the likelihood that individuals will engage in crime or even become victims. The design of effective prevention and intervention strategies makes individuals and communities stronger and better able to counteract risk factors.

These protective factors which prevent and/or reduce their vulnerability have been recognized as the therapeutic and healing practices that are proven successful when overcoming the negative effects caused by the risk factors that the client experienced or can identify with.

Examples of protective factors that will be addressed in skill-building and programming:

  • Positive attitudes, values, or beliefs
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Good mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health
  • Positive self-esteem
  • Success at school
  • Strong social supports
  • Community engagement
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Positive adult role models, coaches, mentors
  • Participation in traditional healing and cultural activities (if applicable)
  • Good peer group/friends
  • Steady employment
  • Stable housing
  • Availability of services (for example; social, recreational, cultural)
Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.
