Project History

The vision for Making Ourselves Matter Services Society (MOMSS) was initiated by community members with a strong social conscience. It was formed in response to the outcry and despair of motivated at-risk young women who were falling through the cracks in the system, a gap in services recognized all too well by social service providers. This life skills apprenticeship was built on the premise that homelessness and recidivism would not be as prominent if there was a subsequent or continuum of services available for clients who are able to demonstrate their willingness to do the hard work needed to evoke change.

The Story Behind the Name

The acronym MOMSS was chosen as it honors and pays tribute to our (founders) own mothers, who embedded a footprint forever on our hearts. Abraham Lincoln was absolutely correct when he said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Our mothers stirred a passion up in us to pay forward what we lovingly received unconditionally, allowing us to continue the circle of love, and by doing so, touch other young women’s lives, empowering them to serve as ambassadors of hope. Our mothers made us matter in their lives, and Making Ourselves Matter Services Society (MOMSS) was created to keep this legacy alive. MOMSS gives at-risk young women the opportunity to rebuild their lives and continue the circle of love.

Never let the odds keep you from doing what you know in your heart you were meant to do.
