Profile and Apprenticeship

Making Ourselves Matter Services Society (MOMSS) enhances the resilience of vulnerable citizens trying to overcome social and economic barriers, providing greater well-being for our female at-risk populations. Our desire is to change the future of youth who are destined for a life woven with poverty, despair, and/or hopelessness. This strategic initiative, utilizing two consecutive stages, has been designed to build a solid foundation of competencies, life skills, and healthy habits that support strength-based self-sufficiency. By championing these women to celebrate their value and dignity, we are increasing their sense of self-worth and positioning them to be role models out in the community.

MOMSS uses the work of researchers on population health and social determinants in its program plan, and has created its apprenticeship around the evidence. One example has been to follow up from the locally prepared 2004 Women at Risk report that outlined issues that placed young women in the community at risk, including the idea that aging out of the system is a crucial risk factor for at risk women's safety and relapse -- an issue which is gathering momentum today, more than a decade later, at provincial levels. The long-term commitment to the full four-years of the apprenticeship demonstrates that each applicant is accountable to themselves and others, ensuring a greater success rate in their sustainability, and realizing their full potential.

Our Life Skills Apprenticeship

If apprenticeships are a time-tested way to learn a skilled trade, why would it prove less effective for learning relevant life skills directly related to living successful balanced lifestyles? Making Ourselves Matter Services Society (MOMSS) has utilized this same strategic framework for motivated at-risk women to develop practical independent living skills, good daily habits, essential core competencies, and a stable support system. Under the continuing mentorship of our staff, effective and valuable practicums are further utilized to maximize long-term success. MOMSS knows intervention is critical if we are truly going to change the cycle of hopelessness for at-risk people, reducing and stopping recidivism, and the continuous struggles that are faced through relapses.

The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.
